At Devonshire, the Erickson Senior Living community at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., community members have a true say in what happens on campus, thanks to the Resident Advisory Council (RAC).
The RAC works closely with community leaders to not only provide feedback but also collaborate on matters both large and small. From sharing compliments on great work completed by the General Services team to weighing in on renovation plans, this open communication ensures that services and amenities reflect the needs of those who call Devonshire home.
Recently, the Tribune sat down with Elena Portoles, president of the RAC, and Executive Director Brad Andrus to learn more about how this collaboration strengthens the community and supports residents.
Tribune: Elena, what inspired you to get involved with the RAC?
Elena: Residents feel more comfortable here, knowing that they have a voice. This creates a sense of connection and contributes to the community's vibrant, worry-free lifestyle. I wanted to be a part of that. I have worked with the RAC since moving to Devonshire in 2019, serving on several committees and collaborating with management. I am happy when a suggestion is acted upon. Neighbors feel comfortable bringing concerns to me, and hearing "thank you for your help" is very rewarding.
Tribune: How would you describe the relationship between community members and administration?
Elena: Our community leaders really care about the residents here. It shows in how they are available to talk and be a part of life at Devonshire. Management has an open-door policy, so they are always ready to listen and assist. Residents appreciate that their ideas and suggestions are acted upon.
Andrus: The partnership between members of the administration and the RAC is very strong. Devonshire is unique in that the leadership team knows many community members personally, especially those active in the RAC. Over time, this culture of listening has built a strong foundation of trust, which is reflected in the positive engagement seen at RAC meetings and community Town Halls.
Tribune: How does the RAC gather input from community members?
Elena: Management and the RAC collaborate to hold Town Halls, listening sessions, open forums, and a yearly satisfaction survey. All residents are encouraged to participate. Residents' ideas are noted and then acted upon when feasible.
Andrus: The leadership team plays an active role at RAC meetings, presenting and answering questions to foster transparency and trust. We also host a "We Heard You" segment during Town Halls to highlight accomplishments that were driven by community member feedback. Resident satisfaction survey results have improved year over year, with increases across multiple categories.
Tribune: Elena, how do RAC committees help shape community life?
Elena: The RAC consists of nine members, and each member chairs a committee that represents different aspects of community involvement, such as activities, movies, and culinary events. The activities committee recommends outings and entertainment, and the movie committee schedules daily showings.
I serve as chair of the culinary committee. We hold forums to gather resident suggestions about meals and service. Then, we work with the Dining Services team to implement changes. These committees ensure resident input is part of ongoing improvements.
Tribune: What are some positive changes that came directly from community member input?
Elena: The RAC formed a welcome committee, which has helped many new neighbors acclimate to community life. This has been very successful!
Andrus: A multiyear renovation project is currently underway at Devonshire, and community members have had a huge impact on its design. Leadership held open house events so residents could review renderings and physical samples before providing feedback that would help guide decisions. We've also added additional lighting in parking areas and a security dispatch center to enhance safety and peace of mind, per community member requests.
Tribune: What is the best part of working together?
Elena: When residents see that their suggestions and concerns are acted upon, they feel comfortable in their surroundings. They know their voices matter!
Andrus: Our interactions help us create the best experience we can for residents. It's about listening, responding, and sharing the "why" behind our decisions. It's a pleasure working with the RAC, knowing that we are working toward the same goal--making Devonshire a great place to live.
