Today's riddle: Why was the scarecrow given an award? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Second convention center hotel a deal, but wait (stetnews.org) — West Palm Beach residents are suing the city to halt a second 400‑room convention center hotel they fear will overwhelm Grandview Heights and nearby condos with traffic, noise, and parking spillover. County commissioners have already approved a 97‑year lease they say will bring billions in rent and taxes, while one dissenting commissioner questions the rosy financial projections and neighborhood protections.
2. GreenMarket returns to West Palm Beach for 32nd year (wpbf.com) — West Palm Beach's award‑winning GreenMarket is back on the downtown waterfront every Saturday morning through May 22, bringing about 150 vendors and live entertainment to Clematis Street. With a "World, Right Here" theme celebrating global flavors and traditions, it's a weekly chance to shop, eat, and socialize without leaving the city.
3. Assistant property manager accused of stealing money orders (wpbf.com) — An assistant property manager at the Andros Isles community in West Palm Beach is accused of diverting residents' clubhouse rental money orders into her boyfriend's bank account, totaling about $13,300. Police say the scheme ran for months before missing records raised red flags, and the homeowners association and affected residents have since been reimbursed.
4. This nearby school district is down 12,300 students, way more than PBC (bradenton.com) — Palm Beach County schools have lost nearly 7,000 students this year, prompting the elimination of 1,200 positions and a proposed salary freeze, even as West Palm Beach campuses welcomed students back in August. Nearby Broward County faces even steeper enrollment drops and is moving ahead with school closures, underscoring wider shifts in how families are choosing schools across South Florida.
5. Florida Man Kills Beloved Minister in Wild Mistaken-Identity Shooting (newsbreak.com) — West Palm Beach Police say a local minister was fatally shot in his car outside a residence after an ex-boyfriend allegedly mistook his girlfriend for her sister. Despite being wounded, he drove them to a nearby fire station, but later died at the hospital, and the suspect is now jailed on murder and related charges as family and church members mourn his loss.
