Today's riddle: What is clean when it is black and dirty when it is white? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Marine Band to perform free concert at Kravis Center (palmswestjournal.com) — A free United States Marine Band concert is coming to the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach on Wednesday, Oct. 14, with tickets required but no admission charge or parking fees. The program will feature Sousa-style marches, patriotic music, and a hometown connection through tuba player and West Palm Beach native Gunnery Sgt. Landres Bryant. Seats must be claimed in advance and filled by 7:15 p.m.
2. Tri-Rail fare increase takes effect as South Florida transit system faces funding challenges (wptv.com) — Tri-Rail riders traveling to and from West Palm Beach are now paying about 10% more, with one-way fares up roughly 30 cents to $1 and round-trips up to $2. Officials say the increase is needed amid delayed state funding and warn that weekend service cuts could follow if finances don't improve. Regular commuters without cars say the higher costs are already straining their budgets.
3. Trump wants to make his West Palm Beach golf club a permanent presidential retreat (nbcnewyork.com) — West Palm Beach residents may see Trump International Golf Club gain a new role, as President Donald Trump backs a proposal to designate it the permanent United States Presidential Golf Course and add a presidential retreat. The plan asks Palm Beach County to transfer some course land to the federal government, with the club funding construction. Officials say the site's security and location make it attractive for future presidents and visiting heads of state.
4. Matt Frieda (cbs12.com) — Viewers in West Palm Beach are getting to know morning reporter Matt Frieda, who has joined WPEC to cover stories that matter across South Florida. The profile traces his path from New York and Nebraska newsrooms to serving this community. It also shares a bit of his life outside work, from Brazilian jiu-jitsu to walking his dog, Mookie.
5. Florida man convicted in $15.7 million COVID-19 fraud scheme (wpbf.com) — A South Florida man has been convicted in a $15.7 million Medicare fraud scheme that used COVID-19 drive-through testing events at country clubs in the West Palm Beach area to bill for unnecessary blood tests. Nearly 2,000 mostly elderly patients were affected, and Medicare paid more than $500,000 on the claims. The defendant now faces a possible lengthy federal prison sentence at a January 2027 hearing.
