ICYMI: Hurricane Season Preparation & Coronavirus

The City of West Palm Beach is encouraging residents to add COVID-related items to their emergency kits.

July 9, 2020

The City of West Palm Beach is encouraging residents to take extra steps to prepare for the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season. The latter half of summer/early fall is a time of high activity for tropical storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic, with September 10th being the statistical peak. It is important to remember that last minute storm preparations may be slowed by virus mitigation practices, so it more important than ever to prepare early. Be sure to add extra COVID-19 related supplies to your emergency kit:

  • At least two cloth masks for every person in the household over 2 years of age,
  • Extra hand soap,
  • Extra hand sanitizer with 70% alcohol, and
  • Disinfectant wipes.

As part of your hurricane preparedness kit, be sure to include a week’s worth of food, water and health supplies as well as two weeks’ worth of prescription medicine.

“Gathering last minute supplies will take longer due to social distancing and other COVID-19 precautions,” said Sarah Mooney Assistant Chief of Police for Emergency Management. “We need to remember that getting started early and being prepared will make storm response and recovery a whole lot easier.”
