May is Mental Health Awareness Month: Beachway Therapy Center Expert Shares Five Ways to Feel More Grounded
Prioritize small, healthy habits that support emotional well-being, resilience and recovery

West Palm Beach, Fla. (May 6, 2026) — May is Mental Health Awareness Month and it is a timely reminder that mental health is not something to think about only in moments of crisis. From busy families and working professionals to caregivers, young adults and those navigating recovery, Beachway Therapy Center is encouraging residents to take small, practical steps to care for their mental well-being every day.
“Improving mental health is not usually about one big fix,” said Carrie Carlton, Chief Clinical Officer at Beachway Therapy Center. “It is often the small, consistent things like getting enough rest, moving your body, staying connected and giving your mind a break that helps people feel more grounded, supported and resilient.”
Carlton offers five simple ways to support better mental health this month and beyond:

1. Protect your sleep
Good mental health starts with rest. Aim for a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends. Poor sleep can affect mood, focus, stress levels and the body’s ability to recover.
2. Move your body regularly
You do not need an intense gym routine to feel the benefits. Walking, stretching, swimming, yoga or even a few minutes outside can help reduce stress and boost mood.

3. Stay connected to people
Isolation can make anxiety, depression and negative thoughts feel heavier. Make time for friends, family, support groups or even simple everyday conversations. Real connection helps people feel less alone.
4. Manage your thoughts, not just your schedule
Many people focus on managing time, but mental health also requires managing what is happening internally. Mindfulness, journaling, quiet reflection or therapy can help people notice thought patterns and respond with more clarity.
5. Limit mental “junk input”
Constant news, social media, comparison and negativity can overwhelm the mind. Setting healthy boundaries around screen time and media consumption can create more space for calm, focus and perspective.
