Mayor James Welcomes 30 Student Interns To City Hall

From the City of West Palm Beach: West Palm Beach Mayor Keith A. James this week welcomed approximately 30 interns to City Hall. The interns are participants in the City’s summer internship program which provides job opportunities for young people who are eager to learn more about the inner workings of municipal government. The students attend high schools in West Palm Beach and have taken internship positions in several City departments including Engineering, Public Works, Law, Sustainability and more!

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, the students become privy to the day-to-day functions of City leaders, employees, and local government. Once a week, the interns attend workshops where they are instructed on the fundamentals of financial literacy, taught resume writing skills, and lectured on job readiness to better prepare them for their future.

“In the City of West Palm Beach, we are focused on creating a community of opportunity for all,” said West Palm Beach Mayor Keith A. James. “We’re happy to have the interns at City Hall. We hope they will be inspired and learn skills needed to help them in college or in their future careers.”

The program, which runs for eight weeks, is facilitated by the City’s Coordinator of Community Initiatives Kevin Jones.

“Many young people might not be aware of the opportunities that exist in local government,” said Jones. “The goal is to expose them to these opportunities.”

The summer internship program is now in its fourth year and is believed to be the largest internship program facilitated by a municipal government in our area. To be eligible for the program, students must reside in the City of West Palm Beach and also attend one of the community schools.
