Hispanic Education Coalition and José Martí Foundation Present 2017 Community Leadership Award to MD Now Urgent Care founder, Dr. Lamelas
Recognizing his contributions and dedication toward educational equity for Hispanic/Latino students in South Florida, Dr. Peter Lamelas, founder, CEO and chief of medical staff at MD Now Urgent Care, is the 2017 Community Leadership Award recipient as named by the Hispanic Education Coalition of Palm Beach and José Martí Foundation.
“Revered physician, accomplished entrepreneur and striving business owner, Dr. Lamelas is an inspiration to all Hispanic students in South Florida and beyond,” says Joaquin Garcia, M.D., founder and board chairperson for the Hispanic Education Coalition of Palm Beach (HEC). “Having relocated from Cuba to South Florida as a young child—today, Dr. Lamelas gives promise to our youth.”
The accolade was presented to Dr. Lamelas during the Annual Hispanic Leadership Awards Luncheon at the downtown Hilton in West Palm Beach on October 27, 2017. Hosted by HEC in partnership with the José Martí Foundation, event speakers included Dr. Robert Avossa, School District of Palm Beach County’s superintendent and Alberto M. Carvalho, superintendent for Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Dr. Peter Lamelas—Education, Medicine and Entrepreneurship
Dr. Lamelas has committed more than 30 years to emergency medicine, EMS and training students and physicians. Before he founded MD Now Urgent Care in 2005, he was the emergency department medical director at West Palm Beach Hospital where he devoted 17 years to serving his staff and patients. Led by Dr. Lamelas, today MD Now is comprised of 200 doctors and 900 employees in more than 30 locations throughout Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.
