Alonso Ravens Baseball Poised For Districts

The Ravens ball club has claimed the #1 seed in 6A District 8. Westchase Patch takes a look at their season, their team and what's in store for the boys.

The Alonso Ravens have claimed the first seed in District 8 baseball playoffs, which begin on April 25 at the school. They will face the lowest seed that makes it through the quarterfinals. Alonso will most likely face the winner of Brandon vs. Bloomingdale game.

Here’s a look at their schedule and what their competition has done:

  • Alonso 6-2(district)   16-4(overall)
  • Plant 5-3(district)   15-7(overall)
  • Brandon 4-4(district)   12-8(overall)
  • Bloomingdale 4-4(district)   14-10(overall)
  • Wharton 1-7(district)   11-8(overall)

Alonso is a well-rounded ball club. Five of their hitters have over 20 hits. Senior Jose Fernandez leads the team in hits (23), RBIs (25) and has hit 8 homeruns.

Fernandez is also one of the best pitchers in District 8. His 1.40 earned run average over 55 innings of work is second best in the district, according to the Florida High School Athletic Association. He’s struck out 79 batters (2nd in the state at 6A) to just 13 walks in that time.

The second part of The Ravens’ one-two punch on the mound is senior Chris Chism. Chism has only pitched about 31 innings, but has struck out 44 while only walking 13 and has a  ERA of 0.66, which is two-one-hundredths away from leading the state in 6A.

The Ravens can also turn to junior Nathan Hahan or sophomore Cody Beckman if they need a third pitcher in the rotation.

This deep, senior-laden team should advance deep into regionals.
