Alonso Track Sends Several Athletes to Regionals; Boys and Girls Teams Take Third Place
Overall it was a great day for the Alonso Ravens track team despite a season-ending injury to one of their star athletes.
The Alonso Ravens were flying high going into Thursday's District 6 track meet. The boys team came in 3rd place at the massive, 79-team Steinbrenner Invitational this year. They looked very likely to give district powerhouses, Plant and Chamberlain a run for their money.
Tragedy struck when senior Gigi Petion took his first jump in triple jump. On the second step from the line, Petion's knee gave way and he crash-landed in the sand pit. Coaches and medical staff came running over and eventually helped Petion get off the field and up on crutches but his day was done.
This hurt the team, taking Petion out of the high jump, which he was sure to repeat as district champ in. Petion could have placed in the triple jump as well.

Nonetheless, the team picked up the pieces and charged on.
Sophomore sensation Quatasia Fantroy continued her dominance in her four events. Fantroy was district champion in the long jump, district runner-up in the triple jump, district champion in the 200m, and in the 400m. Fantroy has a very good chance at making the state finals. Her strongest suit might be the 400m, which she is very close to breaking the minute mark in. She'll most likely need to crack that minute mark to get to the state finals.

Junior Brandon Holloway had a monster day as well. Holloway was district champion in the 100m, district champion in the 200m, district runner-up in the high jump.
Junior Franklin Mosely came up big as well for The Ravens. Mosely crushed the field in the 400m; running a 48.62 second final and beating 2nd place Joe Robinson of Wharton by more than 2 seconds. That time would have got him 5th in the state last year. Mosely also ran the first leg of the district champion 4x400m relay team. Mosely's lap put The Ravens so far ahead that not even a furious effort by the Gaither Cowboys 4x4 team, could overcome.
Junior Jordan Davis also had a great day, placing 2nd and 3rd in long and triple jump, respectively. Davis also ran a leg on the champion 4x400m relay team.
Senior Pree Adonis punched his ticket to regionals, taking second place in shot and third in disc.
Junior high jumpers, Kim Barret and Alexander Biver got in with 2nd and 4th place jumps, respectively.
Freshman Maya Cromuel got 4th in disc and is moving on to regionals.
Sophomore Natyana Gonzales placed 3rd in shot, she is going.
Junior JJ Liotine got 4th in boys disc and is going.
Sophomore Alisa Davis is going in 400m, taking second place behind teammate, Quatasia Fantroy.
Sophomore Jordan Hopes got 4th in the 800m, punching his ticket.
The girls 4x100m relay took 4th, the boys 4x100m took fourth and the boys 4x400m relay will threaten for the regional championship next week. Their time of 3:25.70 minutes would have got them a bid in the finals at states last year.
The boys team came out with 130.5 points, 3rd place.
The girls team took 3rd place as well with 115.50 points.
