Are School's Looking out for the Safety of our children?

Are school's preventing unwanted visitors or giving a false sense of security to unsuspecting parents?

After recent tragedies around the world in schools, I as a parent, was relieved to hear that schools were providing law enforcement or security in every school. Today my faith in this system was squelched in the course of 4 minutes.

My husband and I pick our son up at Sickles High School after 5th period each day, where he normally leaves the front gate and comes directly to the car. Today, we needed to drop off a paper to guidance and parked the car. We walked to the front gate where you are supposed to state your name, purpose using the call box. The bell rang for the end of 5th period and it took 3 times ringing the box before the gate was unlocked by someone inside the building, without so much as peep from the office. No one asked us what we were here for, did not ask for id, nor questioned us in any fashion. My husband is a 6”4 foot tall white male that had a hat on, and was not cleaned shaved. While I know he is a gentle person, an outsider does not. When we walked through the gate there were no less than 40-50 students traveling between classes, and we were able to walk all the way down the hall to guidance without one adult stopping us to ask questions. We passed the main office, student affairs then arriving to the guidance office completely unchallenged by an adult or administrator. The gate was opened without proper justification, and as we were walking out we started to question how easy it would be for someone to come in and commit unthinkable acts on this school. While one could read this post and think we are insane, our profession as Martial Arts professionals and Personal Safety Protection advocates caused us to question the effectiveness of this system? Are the schools, especially the High Schools truly prepare for a situation?
