10 Things I Know to Be True About Fitness

While there are at times exceptions to a rule and I reserve the right to learn, improve upon, and refine my approach in the future, here are ten things I know to be true about fitness today.

Last week I posed the question what’s one thing in the world of fitness you know to be true?  While there are at times exceptions to a rule and I reserve the right to learn, improve upon, and refine my approach in the future, here are ten things I know to be true about fitness today.

  1. There is no magic pill – you must do the work to make a change.
  2. Unless you are an elite level athlete, genetics are not what’s keeping you from reaching your goals – most likely it's behaviors.
  3. It’s never too late to get started.
  4. You must challenge yourself to make progress. You can’t do what you’ve done in the past and expect to see positive change.
  5. It's impossible to out train a bad diet.
  6. More training does not always equal more results.  Training smarter trumps training longer any day.
  7. Eating healthy is not the same thing as eating for fat loss.   In other words, it’s possible to over eat healthy foods too.
  8. Results come after you train.  If you don’t take time to recover and regenerate you may not see any.
  9. The number on the scale, by itself, is a pretty useless piece of information.
  10. Lifting heavy weights will not make a typical woman bigger and bulkier; in fact it can have the opposite effect.  To be honest- it won’t make the typical man bigger either.  Gaining size from lean muscle mass is tougher than most people think.
