Construction Worker Killed by Dump Truck

A 26-year-old construction worker was killed Wednesday night on the Veterans Expressway.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Kimbrough Haines III was standing in the construction zone north of Hillsborough Avenue around 11:23 p.m. when the accident occurred.

A dump truck driven by Ruben Garcia, 20, of Tampa was doing pavement work on the northbound lanes when he started to backup southbound. Haines, however, was standing behind the truck and was struck.

Haines died at the scene.

Troopers say charges in the crash are pending.
