Get Your Family On The Court: Fun And Free Tennis Clinic Offered This Weekend

Looking to have some family-fun this weekend? 

Sign up for the Family Tennis Fiesta taking place from 4pm- 5:30pm Sunday, March 20, at the . 

You don’t need to be Boris Becker or even know the difference between a volley and a serve to join the party. Just put your tennis shoes on, grab your kids and be ready to get goofy on the tennis court with other folks.

“It won’t be tennis oriented,” said coach Mike Larsheid, who will be leading the clinic.  “Instead, there will be a lot of funny crazy ideas.” 

The goal of the event is to encourage youth (6-12 years old) to discover and enjoy the sport in new ways with the whole family.

All levels are welcome. More advanced players should be aware the clinic will have an unconventional approach.

During the Fiesta, families will compete against families, and kids will play against adults. 

Games include a person hitting the tennis ball from one side of the court and another person trying to catch it with a cone on the other side.

"We have this beautiful facility (Westchase Swim and Tennis Center) right in our backyard," said Larsheid, 46. “It’ll be fun for the family to get out and enjoy the outdoor.”

Larsheid, the Westchase Junior Tennis Academy coach, said that sports such as tennis are important means to compete against indoor sedentary activities, such as playing video games.

Also, the event is a way for parents and children to be on the tennis court within a relaxed and fun environment, avoiding situations in which parents get frustrated with their youngsters for missing the ball. 

“Parents have to realize how just to have fun with their kids, not to use sports to pick on them,” he said.

The Family Tennis Fiesta will only happen if a minimum of 8 people sign up.
