Barfield-Craig attempted to avoid the collision, but was unable to. The crash, the email stated, caused the cruiser to spin across the concrete median and into the northbound lanes of Hanley. The cruiser stopped in the left turning lane and inside lane after striking the front of a BMW driven by James Rivera, 50.

Both deputies and Rivera were extracted from their vehicles by Hillsborough County Fire Rescue and were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
