• Lane closure on southbound U.S. 17 in Winter Haven will start Sept. 9 (theledger.com) — Drivers in Winter Haven should prepare for a two-week closure of the southbound inside lane of U.S. 17 near Cypress Gardens Boulevard starting Sept. 9, plus a key turn lane closure. Crews will be installing drainage and building new turn lanes and a signalized entrance for the Target now under construction, which will also add a second left-turn lane to Snively Avenue.
   

• Miss America goes to Miss Texas, topping field that included Ashlyn Mercier, Westborough officer (telegram.com) — Winter Haven gets a proud mention on the national stage as Miss Florida, Alexandra de Roos, earns Miss America's Quality of Life Award and a $10,000 scholarship. The University of South Florida student, aiming to become a neuropsychiatrist, was honored for her advocacy for people with brain injuries during the Miss America competition in West Palm Beach.
