Popular chocolate brand Ghirardelli has recalled several of its powder mixes because they may be contaminated with salmonella.
The Bay Area-based chocolate maker issued a recall Monday for certain powdered beverage mixes. The mixes affected are packaged in large formats intended for food services, but some may also have been available for purchase by consumers through e-commerce platforms.
The recall includes 13 different frappe and hot cocoa mixes, with the following lot numbers and "best if used by" dates:
"This action follows a California Dairies, Inc. milk powder recall due to a concern of potential Salmonella contamination, which was supplied to a third-party manufacturer and used as an ingredient in powdered beverage mixes," the company said in a statement Monday.
No illness connected with the products has been reported to date, according to the company.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
Symptoms usually start between six hours and six days after swallowing the bacteria. Most people recover within a week without medical treatment, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
