ALPHARETTA, GA — Alpharetta's effort to move forward with the proposed North Point Sports and Entertainment District cleared another step thanks to the Fulton County Board of Commissioners.
Alpharetta City Council member John Hipes (Post 4) on Wednesday said the county unanimously approved an intergovernmental agreement tied to the city's Tax Allocation District No. 3.
The approval came after the City Council on Monday evening approved the agreement requesting Fulton County's participation in the TAD, he said, adding the county has agreed to use its portion of the allocation for the redevelopment.

In August, council members approved transforming North Point into a mixed-use development set to feature a 20,000-seat hockey arena that could attract the National Hockey League, WXIA-TV reported in the past.
The opening of the sports and entertainment district would be metro Atlanta's third push to draw the NHL, the news outlet previously reported.
The project is expected to raise the TAD's taxable digest by $976 million, or 374 percent, Hipes said.
That would move the digest from the certified base of $261.2 million as of Dec. 31, 2025, to about $1.24 billion by 2040, he said.
The new district could potentially support 5,000-6,900 permanent on-site jobs, Hipes said.

Progress made on the North Point development is contingent on the NHL awarding a franchise to the area by Aug. 24, 2031, he said.
"Redeveloping a regional shopping mall is difficult," Hipes said. "Alpharetta has an amazing opportunity to make it happen. Thank you Fulton County Board of Commissioners."
