• University of Georgia students begin fall semester (onlineathens.com) — Fall semester has officially started at the University of Georgia in Athens, bringing students back to campus and signaling a busy season for local streets, shops, and neighborhoods. A series of photos documents the first day of classes on Monday, Aug. 17, 2026.
• Surgeons needed to save man caught in concrete placer hopper (equipmentworld.com) — Emergency crews and a specialized surgical team spent two hours rescuing a worker who fell into a concrete placer hopper on the Athens Bypass near Atlanta Highway, ultimately amputating his leg to free him. Athens-Clarke County Fire Department and Piedmont Athens Regional staff coordinated the response, and officials have not yet released the worker's identity or condition.
• It's Not Just Flowers That Help the Pollinators. Grass Can Too. (morningagclips.com) — UGA researchers in Athens have found that common centipedegrass lawns can quietly feed bees well into late summer, not just the flowers in your garden. By mowing every 10–14 days and letting the grass briefly flower, Athens homeowners can turn ordinary yards into important late-season pollinator buffets without giving up a tidy lawn.
