๐Ÿ“ฐ News we're reading

1. Linnentown 'Walk of Recognition' moving forward without UGA participation (athenspoliticsnerd.com) โ€” Athens-Clarke County commissioners just advanced the Linnentown "Walk of Recognition" memorial near UGA, while also tying Pinewood Estates' expansion to finally fixing residents' long-troubled water system. In a razor-thin vote, they also approved pursuing an $825,000 federal grant to strengthen youth homelessness data and outreach, despite concerns from several commissioners about duplicating services.

2. UGA's new pedestrian safety measures change how students navigate campus (redandblack.com) โ€” New pedestrian-scramble crossings and added fencing on Baldwin Street are reshaping how UGA students move between North Campus and central hubs like Tate and Memorial in Athens. Funded by a federal safety grant, the changes aim to slow cars and protect walkers, but some students say longer waits, rerouted paths, and heavier traffic are making daily commutes more frustrating.

3. Hull man killed in three-vehicle crash in Athens (onlineathens.com) โ€” An 80-year-old Hull resident died after driving the wrong way on U.S. 29 near Talley Crossing in Athens, in a three-vehicle crash that also injured two others. Athens-Clarke police say this marks the county's eighth traffic death this year and are asking anyone who witnessed the early-morning collision to contact Master Police Officer Joey Lewis with information.

4. Development of green affordable housing can be a tall order โ€“ Daily Journal of Commerce (djcoregon.com) โ€” Athens-Clarke County officials and Athens Area Habitat for Humanity are pushing green, affordable housing projects like the 63-home Micah's Creek development near downtown to tackle an estimated 10,000-unit housing shortage. By using factory-built homes, insulated concrete forms, and solar panels, they're trading higher upfront costs for lower utility bills and more stability for local families, while navigating complex regulations and new incentive funds.

  • Snake ID, anyone?
This was dead, so probably had more color when alive, but even so was a little more orange than what you see in the picture. Maybe coral in color. โ€ฆ (Nextdoor Cedar Creek/Pointe/Civitan Club)
  • Hi neighbors!
This cat has been coming by the past 4 nights. Is this a community cat or someone's missing pet? It's ear is clipped and I know fixed community catsโ€ฆ (Nextdoor Lavender Glen)
