• Athens man sentenced to life in prison in child molestation case (fox5atlanta.com) — An Athens man has been sentenced to life in prison after an Athens-Clarke County jury convicted him of aggravated sexual battery and multiple counts of child molestation involving a young child. Prosecutors say he must serve at least 25 years of the life sentence plus 40 additional years, and the District Attorney's Office publicly praised the victim's courage while emphasizing support for her family.
• Clarke County School District to renew charter system contract (redandblack.com) — Clarke County School District, which serves Athens, is seeking renewal of its charter system contract, a move that would preserve broad flexibility in school operations and more than $6 million in state funding. The charter status supports programs like Athens Community Career Academy, allows hiring industry professionals as instructors, and requires stronger student achievement and active Local School Governance Teams at every school.
• New viruses found in vulnerable sea turtle populations (wsav.com) — UGA researchers in Athens have identified 19 viruses in Atlantic and Pacific sea turtles, including seven never seen before in any species and one from an entirely new viral family. By cataloging these infections from their Athens labs, scientists hope to better understand which viruses actually threaten already vulnerable turtle populations and give conservation efforts a stronger scientific foundation.
