1. UGA Student Falls 8 Floors From Apartment Window (patch.com) — Athens police report that a University of Georgia student was seriously hurt after falling eight floors from an open apartment window on West Broad Street while dancing on a couch. She landed on the pool deck and was conscious and alert when officers arrived, but her current condition has not been released. The incident has drawn concern in the Athens community about safety in high-rise student housing.
2. 'Uncommon Valor' honors pioneers of Clarke County school desegregation (redandblack.com) — Athens residents recently gathered for "Uncommon Valor," a program honoring Black educators who helped desegregate Athens-Clarke County schools and laid the groundwork for today's classrooms. The event highlighted trailblazing teachers, counselors, and administrators, the renaming of local elementary schools in their honor, and reminded the community that today's integrated district stands on their courage and persistence.
3. Clayton County judge's gun accidently goes off in restaurant, police say (atlantanewsfirst.com) — A handgun carried by a Clayton County Superior Court judge accidentally discharged at Señor Bird's Tacos + Tequila Bar in downtown Athens, chipping the floor and slightly injuring three people. Athens-Clarke police say the gun fired as he reached into his pocket to pay, and although several patrons reported minor injuries, everyone declined medical treatment and no arrest was made.
4. Georgia gas prices top $4 a gallon with no relief in sight (thegeorgiasun.com) — Athens drivers are currently paying the highest average gas prices in Georgia, with regular hovering around $4.24 a gallon compared with a statewide average of $4.19. The piece explains why prices aren't dropping this fall, how current costs compare with past records, and offers practical AAA tips to help you stretch each tank and find cheaper stations.
