Exploring Athens Ga "The Volstead Bar & Grill"

By: Kenneth Stepp

Most of my readers know two things about me. Athens is one of my favorite towns to explore. And I am always looking for the best local eatery in town. I scored with The Volstead. This is not my first visit to The Volstead. I arrive in Athens every time, looking for the right restaurant. My first barrage of criteria is simple each day. Comfortable outdoor seating, wifi that works well, inexpensive pricing, and friendly staff. Then the food has to be good, and the beer cold. It is helpful that there is a good selection of beer.

I arrived at The Volstead today at 11:00 am. The chef was outside checking the opening look of the place and talking with friends. Man was he friendly. I asked what he recommended today. The shrimp, he said. He drew me a dark beer on tap, only before giving me three samples of dark on tap to help me choose. I love this place!

The biggest barrier for me when I roll into a town to explore. Id finding my “home base”. That would be my local eatery. My criteria is needed if I am to be productive while there. Many towns do not have one at all. It’s what keeps me in that town for the entire day. So, today, I stayed for 6 ½ hours. This because The Volstead is awesome. At least for me.

Athens is a town I find myself in quite often. My reasons are many. The historical aspects, architecture, the students, and believe it or not, the noise. Yes, noise. Athens is the noisiest town I have ever explored. And I have explored Atlanta many times. Now, add the fact that it is only 15 miles from my home. I made it one of two default places to go. It really does have it all. At least for me.

If you have a business meeting or, like me, just need someplace to think. Athens is awesome. You will find many people to just watch, if you like. I can’t tell you why I am inspired to write while there. But, some of my best work came while sitting at a table on the sidewalk in Athens. If I have writers block, or just running on empty emotionally. I head to UGGA’s home. I usually find an available parking space in front of The Volstead, gather my things, and make myself at home.

I admit, I live an amazing life. If it isn’t fun, I pass. I work for myself, from my laptop, and do what I like to do. Most can’t. I get that. For me. I created this life because I am single. Many girls in this over 40 and single journey already have a home. My goal was to be able insert my life onto the girls life,  I call her my forever. I only want to bring positive to the table. Not to force her nor I to choose where to live. It’s a weird reason to find the places I do. As for me, I am so glad to have chosen this path. Of my 60k plus readers. How many of you do what you like every day. Email me, let me know your thoughts. I always tell you mine.
