Got a Book to Donate to a Free Little Library?

By the end of March, you'll be able to see the little boxes, filled with books that anyone can borrow. As long as he or she places a book in the box before removing a book.

Such is the philosophy of the Free Little Library. Someone puts up a box, others fill it with books, people take the books. More books arrive. Other people take and read those books.

There are several Free Little Libraries in Athens already, but there are soon to be more.

In Athens, Team Sprockets, a group from LEAD Athens, is launching one of the final stages of local Free Little Libraries on March 7 at Little Kings Shuffle Club in downtown, from 6 to 9pm. For this event, they are partnering with the Young Professionals Network.

They are asking people to come celebrate books and reading, and to meet the artists who painted the five libraries being placed in Athens and Oconee.

The artists are Jimmy "the Cap Man" Strahla, Heidi Hensley, Jamie Culkin, Frank Saggus and Peter Loose. Each person painted one little library. Michael Doolittle designed them and Keith Harvey built them.

"As part of LEAD Athens, we do a community service project," said KaDee Holt, a member of the Sprockets Team. "Literacy is a big issue Athens faces. We can’t solve the problem, but we can bring awareness of it to the community."
