Peachtree NORML comes to Athens!
The movement to end arrests for minor marijuana possession is gaining steam in this "Bulldog City" and the growling will only get louder.
The momentum has been gaining steam in Athens. The Athens-Clarke County Commission has heard from people wishing to see an end to arrests for victimless crimes.
Last month the commission heard from a larger group of citizens about a change that had previously been seriously considered in other cities and states: ending arrests for marijuana possession. The group was Athens C.A.R.E. Project (Campaign for Access, Reform and Education), a student club at the University of Georgia. It is an affiliate of the state level organization Georgia C.A.R.E. Project.
The turnout, 25 citizens, may not seem like a lot but when one considers the conservative vein that runs through the state and the fact that heretofore discussion on this topic before the commission was dramatically diminished, the significance of this change can be better realized. It seems there is no place where people are not going to demand a change in how our country is policed.
But now the Bulldogs of Athens C.A.R.E. Project will not be alone. Peachtree NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) will also have an affiliate in the college town. Meeting once a month beginning in January Peachtree NORML: Athens will augment the efforts of Georgia C.A.R.E. in addition to running their own campaigns.
The new group will meet at 7pm on the second Monday of every month at Fuzzyβs Taco Shop in downtown Athens. Hitting the ground running they already have a line-up of speakers through the entire spring semester starting with the main director of Peachtree NORML, Sharon Ravert, in January.
