"Reverberations: An Athens Celebrates Elephant 6" Exhibit at Lyndon House Arts Center

The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department will present the exhibit, “Reverberations: an Athens Celebrates Elephant 6 Exhibit” from August 23 to October 11, 2014 at Lyndon House Arts Center

One of a number of area-wide exhibits, Reverberations celebrates the music collective, Elephant 6. Elephant 6 members are responsible for much inspiration and activity in the arts and in music here and nationally. The exhibit will include objects such as posters and album covers and some of the original artworks they are based on, as well as photographs by Jason Thrasher and Chad Stockfleth, stop-action animations by Hannah Jones made for Supercluster, props from Music Tapes performances and paintings by Terry Rowlett featuring Elephant 6-ers. The sources are far ranging, from folk-artist RA Miller to a sketch by eminent Athens’ illustrator Eleanor Davis. All of the works were loaned by Elephant 6 band members, associates of the bands, or local Rowlett collectors.

Other objects were painted by original Elephant 6 member Will Hart in his signature mosaic style such as a keyboard case owned by Circulatory Systems’ Pete Erchick and a guitar owned by Elf Power’s Andrew Reiger. Then there is a funky painted transistor radio by Hart that appeared as album art.

The Lyndon House Arts Center exhibit is one of a group of Athens Celebrates Elephant 6 exhibits taking place during the 2014 fall season, which collectively represents an unprecedented collaboration of Athens’ area cultural venues to focus in one theme. (Other venues include the Georgia Museum of Art, ATHICA, GlassCube@Indigo and University of North Georgia- Oconee Campus Galleries.)

Elephant 6 (E6) is the name of a loose but long-standing group of exceptionally creative spirits who have created such uniquely innovative and influential bands as the Olivia Tremor Control, Of Montreal, Circulatory System, Apples in Stereo, The Sunshine Fix, Neutral Milk Hotel and many more. E6 activities have in turn inspired and been inspired by a sizable body of visual art objects; while many of the musicians are themselves well-known visual artists, E6-ers have inspired and been surrounded by scores of talented visual artists. Their body of work—now spanning over 20 years—has enriched our lives, as well as brought international attention to Athens, GA.

Gallery hours are Tuesday and Thursday: noon- 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. All exhibitions are free of charge.
