Suspect Arrested In Rape Of UGA Student

Police say a man forced a University of Georgia student behind a building and sexually assaulted her.

ATHENS, GA — Police say they have arrested the man accused of raping a University of Georgia student after offering to walk her home Saturday.

Tydarius Wingfield, 19, of Athens, was accused of raping the student around 1:45 a.m. in the 400 block of North Thomas Street.

The student was not known to Wingfield when he asked to walk her home, police said. Wingfield was then accused of forcing her behind a building, where police say he sexually assaulted her.

Police say they used cameras from the Real Time Crime Center to examine Wingfield and the student's movements at the location.

They then identified and tracked Wingfield throughout the downtown area after the incident, police said.

Wingfield was arrested on charges of kidnapping, aggravated sexual battery, battery and rape, police said.

Clarke County Jail records on Monday showed Wingfield was being held without bond.
