UGA Student Recovering After Surviving 8-Story Fall

ATHENS, GA — A 21-year-old University of Georgia student appears to be on the mend after surviving an eight-story fall from an apartment window in Athens.

A responding officer noted in a police report that the student, a Virginia woman, was expected to survive after falling onto a pool deck. Patch has reviewed the report, which was released by Athens-Clarke County Police on Tuesday.

The woman was seriously injured after the incident, which occurred around 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the 500 block of West Broad Street, police said.

The student was dancing on a couch or an air mattress near an open window when she fell through the screen and down eight floors, landing on the pool deck, according to the police report. The woman lives in the apartment.

Officers state when they arrived, the woman was on the ground near a pool. The area was located in a second-floor courtyard.

The woman hit a metal bench on her way down, according to report. Officers stated there was blood on the bench cushion, and the bench's armrest was broken.

She was recovering in an intensive-care unit after suffering multiple broken bones, her family told WSB-TV. The family reportedly traveled from Virginia to Athens after learning of the fall.

The apartment complex is reportedly cooperating with investigators.
