ATLANTA, GA — An Atlanta man and Army veteran has been convicted of sexually abusing two minors while stationed in Germany, the Department of Justice said Monday.
A federal jury on Friday convicted Adam Schlueter, 39, of sexually and physically abusing two children younger than age 10 from 2009-13 in Grafenwöhr while he served in the U.S. Army, the DOJ's Northern District of Georgia said.
The children testified during the child, saying Schlueter choked and beat them, justice officials said.
One of the children was 8 years old when Schleuter pushed him through a second-story window and dangled him above ground, prosecutors said.
Schleuter used threats to stop the children and others from reporting the abuse, including threatening to hurt or kill witnesses, justice officials said.
He was convicted of two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a minor under the age of 12 and two counts of assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
Schleuter faces a mandatory minimum of 30 years in prison for each of the aggravated sexual abuse convictions and may be sentenced to life imprisonment, justice officials said. Sentencing is scheduled for July 9.
“The defendant exploited a position of trust to carry out horrific abuse against vulnerable children,” Marlo Graham, special agent in charge of FBI Atlanta, said in a news release.
“The FBI is committed to protecting children wherever these crimes occur and to ensuring those who commit such acts are held fully accountable. We are grateful to the victims for their courage in coming forward and to our partners who helped bring this case to justice.”
