The flooding in Atlanta's downtown/midtown area on Wednesday precedes a soaked Memorial Day weekend in Georgia.
Drivers along I-75/85 were stuck after 2-3.5 inches of rain inundated the busy interstate Wednesday evening.

The flooding was due to heavy rain that came down rapidly, Carmen Hernandez, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Peachtree City office, told Patch on Thursday.
"It just fell really quickly," she said.
In a matter of 30 minutes, the interstate received about an inch and a half of downpour, which Hernandez said was "quite a bit of rain."
No injuries were reported to the NWS.
As the Memorial Day weekend nears, Hernandez warned of pea-sized hail and 40-50 mph winds daily with more storms.
If storms sit and focus on one particular area, she said more flooding could occur, especially if the area has poor drainage.
Atlanta may experience at least 1.5 inches of rain through Sunday.

In north Georgia, 2-3 inches of rain could fall across the area, according to the forecast.
Overall flood risks for the weekend in metro Atlanta were low as of Thursday.
"As it gets warmer throughout the day, the thunderstorms are able to form," Hernandez said.
Though Georgia may not reach triple-digit temperatures before June or July, metro Atlanta could see temperatures in the mid-80s for quite a while.
