Speeding Driver Slams Into, Kills Woman At GA Gas Station While Fleeing Cops: Police

A man fleeing from authorities was accused of killing a woman in a crash during the Memorial Day weekend in Georgia.

ATLANTA, GA — A woman was killed after a man led a police chase with state troopers Monday afternoon in Atlanta, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The deadly crash was one of several accidents that killed a dozen people across the state, the GSP said. The accidents were investigated by multiple agencies.

Troopers tried stop a Hyundai Elantra for traveling 90 mph in a 55 mph zone while heading west on I-20 around 2:45 p.m., the GSP said.

The driver, who authorities identified as 26-year-old Fre’shun Tyai White of Marietta, was accused of slowing down before speeding away from the scene.

White crossed all lanes on I-20 before getting on the Boulevard exit ramp and "abruptly" returning to I-20 west, "nearly causing a crash," the GSP said.

The trooper who tried to conduct the traffic stop was not able to safely follow White once he ventured back onto I-20 and had to instead exit onto Boulevard, the GSP said.

A second trooper nearby saw White "merge recklessly" into traffic and tried to catch up to the Elantra, the GSP said.

Shortly thereafter, authorities said White quickly exited onto the Hill Street ramp.

Investigators determined White lost control of his vehicle, crossed Hill, went into a gas station parking lot and hit a parked car, the GSP said.

A woman, who authorities identified as 51-year-old Chatanna Ohiyesha Patterson, was standing beside the parked car and died of injuries from the crash, the GSP said.

The crash also injured White, a passenger in his vehicle and the driver of the parked car, the GSP said. Troopers then said they were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Their statuses were not immediately known Tuesday.

White faced charges of first-degree vehicular homicide and serious injury by vehicle, along with other related charges, the GSP said.

"Tonight, a family is grieving the sudden loss of a loved one, and our thoughts remain with everyone impacted by this tragedy," authorities said in a news release. "Moments like this leave lasting pain for families, friends, witnesses and the broader community. While the investigation remains ongoing, this incident serves as a painful reminder of the dangers created when drivers make reckless decisions and flee from law enforcement."

The accident was one of four deadly crashes the GSP investigated during the Memorial Day weekend.

The state department investigated a total of 153 crashes with injuries.

GSP reported more than 320 people were charged with driving under the influence while 708 people were charged with distracted driving.

At least 900 seatbelt citations were distributed and the GSP responded to 298 crashes statewide. Of those crashes, the GSP said 31 of them included drivers who were under the influence.

Fourteen crashes also involved commercial vehicles.
