GA Braces For More Flooding As Tropical Threat Looms

Forecasters say they are tracking a possible tropical threat amid storms that are set to bring localized flash flooding to Georgia.

| Updated

Weekend storms could flood Georgia as forecasters monitor potentially tropical conditions in the central Gulf.

While the possible tropical development will largely pose risks to Florida, AccuWeather reported low concerns of tropical rain and wind in southern Georgia. This could ramp up between Thursday and June 11.

“While we always monitor the tropics for potential threats, we’ll be keeping a close eye on the central and eastern Gulf and the southwestern Atlantic,” AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva said in the report. “Climatologically, this region can experience early-season tropical development.”

Areas outside of Georgia's southern region did not appear to be in the projected path of any tropical weather as of Thursday.

However, the storm pattern in the remainder of the Peach State lingers.

Georgia has been inundated with storms in recent days, and the rain does not seem to be clearing anytime soon.

Metro Atlanta and surrounding counties have the greatest risk of more than an inch of rain through Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The storms will primarily arrive daily in the afternoons and evenings through Tuesday, possibly bringing localized flash flooding Friday and Saturday, according to the NWS. Some storms could be strong to severe.

While the rounds of storms could offer a reprieve from the ongoing drought, forecasters recently pointed out several more inches of rain will be needed to completely escape the drought.

Georgia has already received about 2-4 inches of downpour in a span of three days, AccuWeather reported Wednesday.

From Thursday-Saturday, forecasters predict most of Georgia will see 2-4 more inches of rainfall.

"Later this weekend and into early next week, the push of dry air may reach parts of the Gulf Coast. Moisture could surge northward again across the Southeast as next week progresses, potentially aided by a tropical rainstorm that could become the season’s first named storm if atmospheric conditions become favorable," AccuWeather reported.
