Possible Fluorine Leak Investigated At GA Tech

ATLANTA, GA — There were no injuries after firefighters responded to a possible fluorine leak Thursday at Georgia Tech, according to the Atlanta Fire Rescue.

Crews responded to an industrial gas alarm at a research facility at the Georgia Institute of Technology at Atlantic Drive Northwest.

The building had already been evacuated by the time firefighters arrived, fire officials said.

Hazardous materials technicians wearing protective suits evaluated conditions, and firefighters established decontamination lines and deployed G3 portable gas detectors, fire officials said.

"Incidents involving industrial gases require specialized equipment, training and coordination. Atlanta Fire Rescue’s Special Operations personnel worked alongside facility representatives to evaluate conditions and protect responders and the surrounding community," fire officials said.

AFR did not identify the cause of the leak.
