Human Remains Found In East Point Belong To Missing Man, Family Says: Report

Family members told reporters a man who had been missing for a month was found dead in a wooded area in East Point.

EAST POINT, GA — The family of a missing 20-year-old man says his body has been found near an East Point apartment complex, WAGA-TV reported Sunday.

East Point Police had been searching for Derek Samuel since April 29, the news outlet reported. Police on May 11 said Samuel was last seen near 3645 Marketplace Blvd.

On Sunday, police said human remains were recovered in a wooded area behind 3755 Redwine Road.

The address belongs to an apartment complex and was the location of a May 16 search for Samuel.

While police did not identify the remains, family members told reporters they belong to Samuel.

"Although this is not the outcome we all prayed for, unfortunately, it has now become our reality," the family told WAGA-TV. "Thank you to everyone who has prayed on our behalf, and we ask that you continue to keep us covered in your prayers as we navigate this difficult time. It's hard, y'all, we just ask for some privacy to grieve now, please."

During the search for Samuel, authorities previously scoured Aqua Waters Quarry in Lithonia, but he was not found.

East Point Police Chief Shawn Buchanan asked for patience while authorities investigate.

"The investigation remains ongoing, and investigators are working closely with the appropriate agencies to determine the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the discovery," police said.

A cause and manner of death were not released, and it is unknown if foul play is suspected.
