Ground Stop At ATL Airport Issued Amid Storms

Departures to the ATL airport are briefly grounded amid storms that are forecast to slam parts of Georgia with lightning and heavy winds.

ATLANTA, GA — The Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday ordered a ground stop on departures to the Atlanta airport due to thunderstorms.

The order was issued at 2:30 p.m. and will last until 5 p.m. The FAA commented that there were a "lack of routes from the West."

In Georgia, scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected to arrive Thursday evening, according to the National Weather Service said.

Areas near Macon, Sandersville, Madison, Athens, Dublin and Vidalia were at a Level 1 marginal risk for frequent lightning and 60 mph wind gusts.

Additionally, a heat advisory will expire at 8 p.m. Thursday in areas near Savannah, Waycross and Dublin due to 107-degree heat index values.

There was a 30 percent chance for storms in the afternoon in metro Atlanta. These storms may come with gusty winds and frequent lightning, according to the NWS hazardous weather outlook.

Storms could continue through the weekend, according to forecast.

This Afternoon: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 93. West wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Tonight: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 p.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 75. Southwest wind 5-10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph.

Friday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 93. Heat index values as high as 98. West wind 5-10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Friday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 11 p.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 75. Southwest wind around 5 mph.

Saturday: A slight chance of showers before 11 a.m., then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 90. West wind 5-10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Saturday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m., then a chance of showers after 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 73. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Sunday: A chance of showers, then showers and thunderstorms likely after 11 a.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 88. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent.

Sunday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 8 p.m., then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 71. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent.

Monday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 8 a.m. High near 82. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent.

Monday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 2 a.m., then a chance of showers. Low around 69. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent.

Tuesday: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 83.
