Tropical Storm Bertha Forms; Flash Flood Risks Arise In GA

Amid the formation of Tropical Storm Bertha, forecasters say flash floods are possible due to storms in Georgia.

| Updated

As Tropical Storm Bertha puts the northern Gulf on alert, forecasters say there should be no direct hit to north and central Georgia.

However, the system will support humidity and raise chances for showers and thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon in central Georgia, according to the National Weather Service's Peachtree City office.

NWS Meteorologist Meredith Wyatt on Monday told Patch portions of south Georgia could experience an uptick in cloud cover and possibly more rain than other areas due to Bertha, which is expected to continue pushing westward.

Bertha was located about 70 miles south-southwest of Panama City, Florida, as of the National Hurricane Center's 10 a.m. CDT update.

Though Bertha may not directly slam Georgia, floodwaters could arise with storms Wednesday, according to the NWS.

Metro Atlanta is among towns that could experience a 15 percent slight risk of localized flash flooding Wednesday afternoon and overnight.

"Interplay between moisture streaming off of Tropical Storm Bertha and a stalling frontal boundary will support training showers and thunderstorms across the northern half of the forecast area, leading to heightened chances for localized flash flooding," the NWS stated.
