GA Man Who Rescued Pregnant Fiancée During FL Shark Attack Hospitalized: Report

DAYTONA BEACH, FL — A metro Atlanta man has been hospitalized after rescuing his pregnant fiancée from a weekend shark attack in Daytona Beach, WAGA-TV reported.

The incident happened Saturday, when a medium-sized shark latched onto Jacorey High's left leg, he told the news outlet.

The 22-year-old Henry County resident was able to get his fiancée to safety and fight against the shark, which reportedly also tried to attack his arm and right leg.

"I realized right away it was a shark because of the way it bit down on my foot, but I was more worried about getting my fiancée out of the water," High told WAGA-TV.

High was eventually able to run and escape the attack but had to reportedly undergo surgery. Recovery could reportedly take about three months.

A GoFundMe has been started to collect funds to help with living costs, medical expenses and lost income, according to the fundraiser.

"Despite the excruciating pain and significant blood loss, he found the strength to run for help, a courageous act that ultimately helped save his life," read the GoFundMe. "Jacorey has sustained extensive ligament and tendon damage to his foot and remains hospitalized, with doctors expecting him to stay for at least another week. His recovery will be long and challenging, requiring multiple treatments, rehabilitation and an extended time away from work with no clear timeline for his return."

As of late Monday morning, $735 of the GoFundMe's $100,000 goal had been raised.

Shark Safety Tips

• Swim with a buddy.
• Stay close to shore.
• Don't swim at dawn or dusk.
• Don't swim around schools of fish or where people are fishing.
• Avoid wearing jewelry.
• Avoid excess splashing.

If a shark does get near you:

• Maintain eye contact with the shark.
• Slowly move away, and if possible, exit the water.

If the shark tries to bite you:

• Hit shark in the eyes and gills. These are sensitive areas that can be hurt regardless of personal strength.
• Hit the shark on the snout and push away. Water-resistance weakens your punch.
