ATLANTA, GA — One of Georgia's largest health care systems is scaling back its workforce by laying off nearly 800 employees, according to recent media reports.
Wellstar Health System on Tuesday revealed it has cut 761 administrative, shared services and corporate jobs, both WABE and CBS News reported. This makes up 2 percent of Wellstar's 35,000 employees in the state, CBS News reported.
The impacted administrative roles were within Wellstar Medical Group, the company told WABE.
Frontline workers, such as physicians and nurses, were reportedly not affected by the reduction.
Anyone who has been impacted by the job cuts have already been notified, Wellstar told WABE.
"As a non-profit health system, Wellstar has a responsibility to regularly evaluate how we operate so we can continue to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve. ... These changes will help us simplify our structure, clarify roles, strengthen accountability and move decision-making closer to the people who care for patients, while positioning Wellstar for continued long-term sustainable growth. Our mission has not changed, and our patients will continue to receive the same compassionate, high-quality care they expect from Wellstar."

The news comes after Wellstar announced intentions to acquire the Mountain Lakes Medical Center in the northeast town of Clayton. The company expected to finalize the agreement made with the center by Saturday.
Additionally, construction on new facilities were reportedly underway in Cobb and Paulding counties.
