The Lovett School breaks ground on new campus hub, Rita Anne Rollins Hall (wsbtv.com) — Families near The Lovett School in northwest Atlanta will see big campus changes as construction begins on Rita Anne Rollins Hall, a new hub for worship, dining, arts, and student support. Funded by a record $30 million Rollins family gift, the building anchors Lovett's centennial celebration and is slated to open in fall 2028 with expanded green space and modern learning areas.
2. Hartsfield-Jackson Airport to receive $100 million from Federal Aviation Administration investment (wkrg.com) — Atlanta travelers should know Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is getting a $100 million federal investment to rebuild runways, taxiways, terminals, and safety areas. Announced just before Labor Day, the grant is part of a nationwide FAA package aimed at easing congestion and improving long-term safety and efficiency for millions of passengers using the world's busiest airport.
3. Downed trees, power outages reported in metro Atlanta after strong storms (wsbtv.com) — Strong storms have knocked down trees and cut power to tens of thousands across metro Atlanta, with outages and damage reported in city neighborhoods, DeKalb County, and Buckhead. Crews are responding to fallen trees on homes, dark traffic signals on Peachtree Street, and scattered damage in suburbs like Roswell, Braselton, and College Park.
4. Operator of Sham Produce Companies Sentenced to Federal Prison for Cocaine Importation and Money Laundering (cannabislaw.report) — An Atlanta man has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for using sham produce companies to route cocaine shipments into the Atlanta area and launder more than a million dollars back to Mexico. Investigators intercepted cocaine hidden in electronics and limes bound for Georgia, and a Stone Mountain co-defendant awaits sentencing for money laundering.
5. Georgia marks second anniversary of Apalachee High School shooting (roughdraftatlanta.com) — State leaders and families gathered at the Capitol in Atlanta to mark Apalachee Remembrance Day, honoring victims of the 2024 Apalachee High School shooting. While Gov. Brian Kemp praised first responders, advocates and lawmakers from both parties are pressing for stronger school safety and gun storage measures they say are needed to prevent another tragedy.
