ATLANTA, GA — A suspect has been arrested after a child was found dead in a Cardinal Drive Southwest home, Atlanta Police said Tuesday.
The suspect's vehicle was tracked to Washington in Wilkes County, where police said local deputies arrested 32-year-old Jasmaine Smoak.
Smoak was arrested after a child was found dead around 7:15 p.m. in the 3500 block of Cardinal Drive, police said. The child was not identified, and police did not release a cause and manner of death.
Officers found the child after they responded to a welfare check and forced entry into the home, police said.
Despite life-saving, the child was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Smoak faces charges of second-degree cruelty to children and concealing the death of another, and was taken to the Wilkes County Jail, police said. Her relation to the child, if any, was not revealed.
A motive has not been released. APD's Homicide Unit is investigating the case.
Washington is located 109 miles east of Atlanta.
