1. RCBOE to release communication to families on guidelines, school district votes to transfer tax credit to architect (theaugustapress.com) — Richmond County's school superintendent is rolling out a clearer communication plan for Augusta families, including a letter on visitor guidelines and more customer-service training for school staff. At the same meeting, the board voted to allocate federal energy-efficiency tax deductions to Augusta's Dickinson Architects for work on the Academy of Richmond County's renovated classroom building.
2. Augusta to Chicago? Grant funds flights from Garden City to Windy City (augustachronicle.com) — Augusta Regional Airport has secured an $800,000 federal grant to launch a new nonstop route to Chicago O'Hare, one of the top destinations for local travelers. The funding will back revenue guarantees and marketing, helping keep the route viable even if it's slow to turn a profit, and could reduce the need for residents to drive to other airports for Chicago flights.
3. Setup underway as athletes begin arriving for Ironman 70.3 Augusta (wrdw.com) — Ironman 70.3 Augusta arrives this Sunday, bringing more than 3,500 athletes to the Augusta area and significant road closures downtown from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m. along Broad, Reynolds, Gordon Highway and the North Augusta Greenway. Athlete check‑in runs Friday and Saturday at the Augusta Convention Center, and local businesses are preparing for a busy weekend.
4. Community Foundation focuses on gains in literacy across CSRA (wrdw.com) — A CSRA Community Foundation initiative is targeting low literacy in specific Augusta neighborhoods, investing over $250,000 in local partners and reaching more than 1,200 children. The effort now concentrates on families zoned for Lamar Milledge, W.S. Hornsby, and T. Harry Garrett elementary schools, and residents are encouraged to learn about the challenges and support the work during National Literacy Month.
5. New mentor and leadership program for CSRA high school senior boys (wjbf.com) — High school senior boys in the CSRA can now apply for the Emerald Excellence Beautillion, a new mentorship and leadership program run by the Augusta chapter of The Links. An optional in-person info session is set for Saturday, Sept. 26 at the Augusta Municipal Building, and applications are due by Friday, Oct. 2, along with a fee and ticket commitment for the culminating gala.
