CAPITOL CITY OPERA COMPANY TO PRESENT GILBERT AND SULLIVAN'S THE MIKADO
Capitol City Opera will present Gilbert and Sullivan's light-hearted operetta The Mikado May 20-22 at Conant Performing Arts Center.
Characterized by clever wordplay, memorable tunes, and endearing characters, Capitol City Opera's contemporary staging of The Mikado features clever plot twists, anime characters, iPhones, and unexpected use of set design.
As with many of Gilbert and Sullivan’s productions, the show satirizes aspects of Victorian Britain’s politics and aristocracy. The Mikado is set in Japan.
Nanki-Poo, the son of the Japanese Emperor (The Mikado) has run away to marry the beautiful Yum-Yum. Yum-Yum is the ward of Ko-Ko, the lord high executioner, and has become engaged to him against her will.

In the meantime, Ko-Ko realizes he is too soft-hearted to be an executioner. His solution is to trade a month of marriage to Yum-Yum for Nanki-Poo’s life, but of course, the plan backfires and Ko-Ko finds himself subject to capital punishment for allegedly killing the Mikado’s son.
But the tangled web unravels, and everyone lives happily ever after.

This production features Atlanta-based performers Khary Wilson, Jonathan Spuhler, Antoine Griggs, Ivan Segovia, Bevin Hill, Katie Oates, Elisabeth Slaten, Laurie Tossing, and Cory Shantz as The Mikado. It is directed by Michael Nutter, with Music Direction by Catherine Giel. The conductor is Michael Giel.
The Mikado runs Friday, May 20 at 8:00p.m., Saturday, May 21 at 8:00p.m., and Sunday, May 22 at 3:00p.m. at Conant Performing Arts Center at Oglethorpe University. Tickets are available online at CCITYOPERA.org.
