Demolition Begins For Peachtree Creek Greenway In Brookhaven

A former sign shop will be demolished Wednesday as construction is set to begin on Brookhaven's portion of the greenway.

BROOKHAVEN, GA -- A former sign shop is set for demolition Wednesday morning as Brookhaven prepares to build its portion of the Peachtree Creek Greenway (PCG). The deserted building will be replaced in the coming months with green space, paved walkways and multi-use trails. Mayor John Ernst, District 4 Councilman Joe Gebbia and members of Peachtree Creek Greenway, Inc., will begin the demolition at 10:30 am at 2036 North Druid Hills Road in Brookhaven in preparation for construction of the greenway's first phase.

On Oct. 23, the City Council awarded a $7.99 million contract to Lewallen Construction Co., to begin phase one of the PCG, which will stretch 1.27 miles from North Druid Hills Road to Briarwood Road. Construction is expected to begin next month.

The PCG Master Plan outlines a series of nature trails, paved multi-purpose trails, and promenade trails which will connect Brookhaven’s portion into the 12.3-mile Peachtree Creek Trail project from Mercer University in unincorporated DeKalb to the PATH400 trail, the South Fork Conservancy Trails and the Atlanta Beltline. The PCG will also provide connectivity to areas beyond as part of a larger network of multi-use trails to residences, offices, restaurants, bike rental stands, coffee shops, and picnic areas.

The PATH Foundation will oversee the construction of Phase 1. In March 2017, the City Council voted to engage the foundation for engineering of this section, which is the central link in Brookhaven’s 2.9 miles of the trail.
