BROOKHAVEN, GA -- Two pre-teenaged boys were caught by police, playing a prank on passing motorist that could have developed into a tragic situation.

Police were recently dispatched to a Brookhaven neighborhood after reports that an armed individual was seen standing over another person and pointing a gun at his head. When police arrived, they found the two boys hiding in some nearby bushes, holding airsoft toy guns.

Despite the fact that airsoft toy guns have an orange tip on their end of their barrels, police said the guns “looked remarkably real especially with it being pitch black outside.

“When asked what they were doing, the boys said they were playing a prank on passing motorists by pointing the guns at each other and trying to be funny,” police said in a statement.

Here is the rest of what the department’s Facebook page had to say about the incident:

“This incident could have tragically ended had any small variable been different. Including some passing citizen who thought they were saving a life, but instead took one of those pre-teens lives because of a bad prank.

“Thankfully the responding officers recognized the situation for what it was and no one was harmed. We really try our best 24/7 365 days a year to do the right thing and make the right choices. It can be extremely difficult to do this in the seconds we have to process the situation. We only ask if you have young children to use this incident as a learning experience and discuss with them the importance of making smart decisions and being safe.”
