BROOKHAVEN, Ga. -- What will Brookhaven look like over the next 20 years? Residents can help city leaders and planners decide in a series of upcoming meetings and workshops.

This month, the city is hosting four kickoff meetings for the Character Area Study, an effort to give residents a voice in guiding the growth of housing, retail, office and other projects in their neighborhoods. Each public meeting will cover Brookhaven's development process, including topics such as zoning and property values.

At each of the kickoff meetings, residents can also sign up for interactive workshops that cover plans for their "character area," or the section of the city in which they live.

Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the Character Area Study gives residents the opportunity to protect their neighborhoods and get involved in the city's planning process.

Last year, the city adopted Comprehensive Plan 2034, a document that sets out guidelines for residential and commercial growth over the next two decades. The plan divides Brookhaven into 13 character areas, or sections of the city "that share similar traits and can be developed in a coordinated manner," the Journal-Constitution said.
