Sutton: Free YMCA Memberships for Family, Staff Are Legal

The embattled DeKalb commissioner received the perks while she was supporting a deal between the county and the 'Y.'

DECATUR, GA -- DeKalb Commissioner Sharon Barnes Sutton allegedly received several free memberships to a local YMCA at the same time she was negotiating a deal between the county and Wade Walker YMCA.

The free memberships, given to Sutton, her two sons and two staff members, were worth more than $25,000, according to Channel 2 Action News.

The chief marketing officer for the Metro Atlanta YMCA says the free memberships probably shouldn’t have been given.

But Sutton defended the YMCA’s policy of offering complimentary memberships, adding that, “It is legal.”

No other commissioner has been offered a free ‘Y’ membership, including Nancy Jester of Dunwoody or Jeff Rader of Brookhaven.
