Tour Brookhaven's New LA Fitness

Assistant General Manager Ameer Aziz shows off the new facility.

UPDATE: 8/26/11

The first thing to notice after entering Brookhaven's new LA Fitness facility is lots of space - 50,000 square feet of it.

A heated lap pool shimmers through the glass windows.  Row upon rows of assorted weight-lifting machines fill the space behind the check-in kiosk. Giant inspirational words and images of men and women in action tower above on the walls. The entire facility is immaculate.

Assistant General Manager Ameer Aziz beams with a smile and a welcome from behind the kiosk, and gives Brookhaven Patch the grand tour.

"The $11 million facility took nearly a year to build. It's one of the largest in the country, definitely the largest in the state of Georgia," said Aziz. "It's definitely one of our flagship clubs."

Its Monday evening, and members can be seen working out everywhere, but its not crowded. Plenty of available machines and floor space can be found. There are colorful balance balls, medicine balls, and yoga mats spread out like toys in an open area.

The workout equipment is state of the art. A door opens, and fifteen pairs of hightops can be heard squeaking on the shiny basketball court - the players' hollers echoes off the walls.

The raquetball courts evoke lottery ball mixers, the tiny balls careening and bouncing around inside.

A spin class room on the first floor, however, is silent. Three empty rows of silver futuristic spin bikes glisten with silver discs, awaiting future high-speed calorie burning bonanzas. The facilities are so new, it's easy to tell that some of it has yet to be used.

The second level overlooks the first, providing those using the elliptical machines and other cardio equipment with an expansive view of the space below. Aziz notes that the cardio machines topped with little flat screen televisions feature ten cable channels including ESPN, CNN, and Lifetime, among others.

Nearby the cardio area is a second roomy studio for fitness classes, decked out with a polished hardwood floor, wall-to-wall mirrors, step equipment, mats, and five punching bags hanging from the ceiling. Bins of kickboxing gloves sit close by for anyone who wants to pummel them.

The fitness class schedule comes out next week.

"Some of the classes will be yoga, pilates, and cardio kickboxing. We have some bootcamp classes, as well as aquafit classes that will take place in the pool," said Aziz.

"Zumba is one of the classes that we anticipate having. I have to find a certified Zumba instructor," said Aziz.

Men and women's locker rooms are no exception to the work out area in terms of design. Wood paneled lockers, granite counters, and tile floors are clean and comfortable. A walk-through opens out onto the heated, chlorinated 25 foot lap pool. A dry sauna and a spa are added perks to a post-workout routine.

This LA Fitness also provides personal trainer services.

Update: A new membership deal previously offered by the Brookhaven location of LA Fitness is no longer available.
