2-Lane Roundabout Planned At Phipps-Wieuca Intersection
Circular lanes would replace one of Buckhead's most busiest intersections.
BUCKHEAD, GA -- City planners are again looking at a proposal that would create a roundabout at Phipps Boulevard and Wieuca Road. The newest plan calls for a two-lane design.
The roundabout would replace the intersection, which is often jammed with residents trying to get into and out of the surrounding neighborhoods, shoppers visiting the surrounding malls, and on Sundays, worshippers at Wieuca Baptist Church.
"The purpose of the project is to relieve traffic congestion, improve safety and to enhance pedestrian and bicycle facilities at this intersection," Darion Dunn, director of capital improvements and planning for the Buckhead Community Improvement District, told Patch on Thursday.

The plan was briefly in limbo when Wieuca Baptist contemplated selling the property, which is located on prime real estate across the street from Phipps Plaza with easy entry points into Dunwoody and Brookhaven.
The church decided in October to stay put. The landscape around the structure has undergone considerable change in recent years as retail shops at Phipps Plaza got renovated and new office space opened up on nearby Peachtree Dunwoody Road.

The Buckhead CID is still working through a timeline of when work on the roundabout will be begin.
"The construction timeline has not been established for the Wieuca-Phipps roundabout project, considering we are still in the conceptual design phase of the project," Dunn said.
The next steps for planning officials include talking to area residents and businesses about the impact the roundabout would have. Bike lanes are also part of the plans, according to Dunn.
"After the concept plan has been finalized, we will schedule a public meeting to solicit comments and offer details about the project schedule," Dunn said.
