Amazon Prime Day 2016 Deals Kick Off in Atlanta

Amazon is counting down the days to its second annual Prime Day sales event by allowing Prime Now members the opportunity for select deals from now through July 12.

Amazon is targeting Atlanta and 46 other metro areas worldwide for the promotion. Prime members who place their first-ever Prime Now order using promotional code 10PRIMENOW will receive $10 off. They also receive a $10 off promotional code to shop on Prime Now later in the month.

Customers also have the option of receiving their purchases within an hour through Amazon's Prime Now delivery service.

Amazon says the number of sells and dealers for this year's Prime Day has grown by more than 10 times since last year. On its first Prime Day in 2015, Amazon's worldwide order growth jumped 18 percent over Black Friday 2014, according to CNET, as as customers ordered 34.4 million items across Prime-eligible countries, or 398 items ordered per second.

"Prime Day gives small businesses and entrepreneurs selling on Amazon from around the world a peak sales day during the summer months," said Peter Faricy, vice president for the Amazon Marketplace. "Prime Day is great for customers and sellers. Customers have the opportunity to support small businesses by purchasing unique products at a great price with fast, free shipping, and it helps sellers prepare for the upcoming holiday season by providing feedback and more customer reviews on new and top-selling products."

The Cyber-Monday-in-July event has been compared to Alibaba's own manufactured sales event in China called Singles Day.

Amazon restaurant delivery officially went online in Atlanta on June 6, 2014.
