Atlanta City Limits Population Remains Stable Since 2000

U.S. Census Bureau releases Georgia data.

The city of Atlanta’s population changed less than 1 percent over the last decade, according to figures released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

A total of 420,003 people currently reside inside Atlanta city limits, which includes Buckhead. That’s an increase of 3,529 people from 2000’s figure of 416,474, or 0.8 percent. Atlanta’s home county of Fulton remains Georgia’s largest, with a population of 920,581 and a 12.8 percent growth rate since 2000.

African-Americans continue to be a majority in the city, with 226,894 residents compared with 161,115 whites. Latinos account for 21,815 residents, along with 13,188 Asians.

Buckhead’s neighboring county of DeKalb, with 691,893 residents, grew at a much smaller rate – 3.9 percent – than other metro Atlanta counties.

Growth rates for metro Atlanta’s other counties include Gwinnett, with a population of 805,321 (increase of 36.9 percent); and Cobb, 688,078 (increase of 13.2 percent).
