According to WSB-TV, investigators with the Department of Watershed Management now know that the water meter at the 100-unit City Side Lofts complex was malfunctioning and was improperly read, which meant that the city thought the complex had used 1.5 million gallons of water during the previous billing cycle. Management was floored when it received a water bill for $47,408, and had been threatened with loss of water service if it didn’t pay up.

The department told WSB-TV that it has replaced the faulty meters and has adjusted the complex’s latest billing statement and reset its balance, meaning a return to the complex’s normal bill of approximately $4,000 a month.
